“Celebration of kitsch is a wicked delight. Eurobeat is immense, well-observed fun...tight yet authentically over the top dance and comedy routines that rival the real thing…costume, lighting, set and sound design are all spot-on and the multi-tasking cast of 20 are excellent”
SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
“Zemiro is simply sensational…they are having an absolute ball, as will you… It’s a winner, no contest. “ SUNDAY TELEGRAPH – SYDNEY
“Irresistibly silly lampoon if a universe beyond parod …funny, clever…Julia Zemiro’s timing is priceless” THE AUSTRALIAN
"Spoof shows can be fickle things - while imitation may represent the highest form of flattery, it can also lead straight to failure. So it was with some trepidation that I walked into Eurobeat – a show that dares to send up what is possibly the most camp, kitsch and brilliantly tacky song contest on earth..... Each section of the audience was divided by country and people were bonded by a psychotic zeal to see their default demographic win.
Eurobeat host Bronya (Julia Zemiro), was comically assaulting as the ‘face of modern Bosnia-Herzegovina’. It would be easy to whitewash a role like this, yet underneath the pink feathers and car-accident blusher, Zemiro played the role for what it was rather than simply mocking it. The result was even more comic than had Zemiro gone for the obvious laughs, which would inevitably have had a shorter shelf-life.
Much the same can be said of Jason Geary who played co-host, Sergei Puukolisto – the short trouser-legged star of Bosnia’s only children’s show ‘Wake Up Sergei’. Geary’s static accent and gauche attempts at humour and high-fashion were cringeworthingly spot-on. The rest of the cast pulled the show together perfectly and let it fall apart at well-timed intervals.
Five points must go to Sweden’s lycra-clad ‘Abba-esque’ troupe, (mis)led by a perfectly plastic ken-doll . Four points to Russia’s camper-than-a-holiday camp’s smiling foursome and three points to Bjork’s nemesis, Gert Grollmersdetter (Louise Bell), who nearly stole the show with her exponential attitude.
